Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before you head off in an Open Shell Adventures 4WD camper.
How do I book an Open Shell Adventures 4WD camper? +
All bookings are handled securely through Camplify. Just head to our Oyster vehicle listings on Camplify, select your dates, and follow the prompts. If you’re unsure which vehicle suits you best, message us on Camplify or WhatsApp first and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Can I book directly with you instead of Camplify? +
We use Camplify for bookings, payments and insurance. This protects both you and us, and keeps everything in one place. If you have questions before booking, you can absolutely chat with us via WhatsApp or email, then complete the booking through Camplify once you’re ready.
Is there a minimum hire period? +
Yes. Our minimum hire is 3 days. Peak periods and long weekends may have longer minimums – Camplify will show this when you select your dates.
Is there a kilometre limit, or can I drive as far as I like? +
Each listing on Camplify shows the included kilometres per day (300 KM per day) for your hire. If you’re planning a big lap or long distances, you can add our Unlimited KM upgrade for $25 per day (subject to availability and approval).
If you’re not sure whether you need unlimited kms, tell us your rough plan and we’ll give you honest guidance.
Do I need to pay a bond or security deposit? +
Yes. Camplify charges a security bond and manages the funds. The exact amount depends on the insurance option you select and will be shown clearly at checkout.
We also have a dedicated Accident Excess & Insurance page on our website that explains how liability, excess and bond work in plain English.
What age do I need to be to drive your vehicles? +
Drivers must be at least 21 years old, hold a full, valid driver’s licence (no L or P plates), and meet Camplify’s insurance criteria. Additional drivers can usually be added through Camplify as long as they meet the same requirements.
Can international licence holders drive the vehicle? +
Yes, provided your licence is valid for driving in Australia and meets Camplify’s requirements. In some cases you may also need an International Driving Permit – check the latest info for your country before you travel.
Where do I pick up and drop off the vehicle? +
Our vehicles are based in Perth, Western Australia. Pick-up and drop-off are usually from WILLETTO N / BALDIVIS (CONFIRM YOUR EXACT LOCATION HERE).
The exact address and instructions will be shared in your Camplify booking once confirmed.
What time can I pick up and return the camper? +
Pick-up and return times are agreed individually, but are generally between 8:00am and 5:00pm. We’ll confirm your exact times closer to your trip so they work with both your flights and our handover schedule.
If you need very early pick-up or late return, let us know in advance and we’ll see what’s possible.
How long does the handover take? +
Allow around 60–90 minutes for handover. We’ll walk you through the vehicle, rooftop tent, 12V system, fridge, awning, recovery gear and how everything works so you’re confident before you drive away.
Even if you’re new to 4WD touring, we’ll take it step-by-step and keep it simple.
Can I leave my own car when I collect the camper? +
In most cases, yes – we can provide a spot for one vehicle at the pickup location for the duration of your hire. Space is limited, so please confirm this with us before your trip.
Do I need to clean the vehicle before returning it? +
Yes, we ask that you return the vehicle in a reasonably clean condition:
• Quick outside wash to remove heavy dirt and bugs
• Vacuum inside to remove sand, dust and mud
• Rinse and dry any used cookware and utensils
If the vehicle or equipment is returned very dirty or with red dust/sand everywhere, extra cleaning charges may apply as per our terms and Camplify’s policies.
What’s included with my Open Shell Adventures camper hire? +
Our Oyster campers are set up to be trip-ready. Inclusions can vary slightly per vehicle, but typically you’ll get:
• Rooftop tent and 270° awning
• 12V system, battery and inverter for small 240V appliances
• 12V fridge/freezer
• Basic kitchen setup – stove, gas, cookware, plates, cutlery, etc.
• Tables, camp chairs and essential recovery gear
Each Camplify listing has a detailed inclusions list for that specific vehicle.
Is bedding and linen included? +
We offer bedding and towel packs as optional add-ons (shown in Camplify when you book). If you’d prefer to bring your own linen and sleeping bags, that’s perfectly fine too.
How long can I stay off-grid in your campers? +
You can comfortably stay off-grid for around 2 days without plugging into power, depending on how hard you run the fridge and accessories.
With our solar setup connected and a bit of sensible power use, you can often stay off-grid for much longer. If you tell us how you plan to travel, we can give you realistic expectations for your specific trip.
Are pets allowed in the vehicles or rooftop tent? +
PET POLICY GOES HERE – for example:
• Option A: “No, we don’t currently allow pets in our vehicles or tents.”
• Option B: “Pets may be allowed by prior approval only – please message us on Camplify before booking.”
Can I drive on gravel roads and off-road tracks? +
Yes – our vehicles are built for adventure, and you’re welcome to drive on sealed roads and well-maintained unsealed roads that are legally open to the public.
Very rough, technical 4WD tracks, deep mud, rock crawling and water crossings are not what these rentals are for. If you’re unsure whether a particular track is okay, ask us before you commit – it’s cheaper than recovery and repairs.
Is beach driving allowed? +
Beach driving is allowed on legal, gazetted beaches, provided conditions are suitable and you drive responsibly.
• Never drive through saltwater or below the high-tide mark
• Drop tyre pressures appropriately
• Avoid soft, boggy sections if you’re not experienced
• Always follow local signage and regulations
Any damage from saltwater, bogging or misuse is the hirer’s responsibility and may not be covered by insurance.
Can I take the vehicle anywhere in Australia? +
Our focus is on Western Australia road trips. Travel outside WA or into very remote regions may not be allowed or may require our written approval in advance.
If you’re planning remote tracks or Aboriginal land, you’re responsible for obtaining the correct permits and checking current road conditions and restrictions.
Who do I contact if something goes wrong on the trip? +
You’ll have access to 24/7 support through Camplify plus direct contact with us for vehicle-specific issues. Roadside assistance details will be provided in your booking and handover.
If it’s an emergency, always call 000 first. Then contact us / Camplify once you’re safe.
What happens if I damage the vehicle or equipment? +
First, make sure everyone is safe. Then contact us and Camplify as soon as possible with photos and details.
Any damage will be assessed under the insurance and accident excess selected when you booked. Our Accident Excess page explains how this works and what typical scenarios look like, so you know where you stand before you travel.
Can I change my booking after it’s confirmed? +
Changes are handled through Camplify and depend on vehicle availability and the timing of your request. If you need to shift dates, add extras, or adjust your trip, message us via Camplify as early as possible and we’ll see what we can do.
Cancellation and amendment rules are set out in Camplify’s terms and in our listing – please read these carefully before booking.
